About NCFHP
The North Carolina Farmworker Health Program (NCFHP) is a state-level program located within the Office of
Rural Health and Community Care (ORHCC) within the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
Our team believes in quality health care for all and envisions access to quality, affordable, community-based,
culturally appropriate, comprehensive healthcare services for migrant and seasonal farmworkers and their
families in North Carolina, contributing to their improved health and quality of life.
Our mission is to work with and through a statewide network of service providers to improve the health of
migrant and seasonal farmworkers and their families in the state.
To achieve our goals and objectives, NCFHP collaborates with colleges, universities, and community
organizations on workforce development activities, providing placement opportunities that expose students to
the farmworker community in our state and to the issues that affect their lives. Students placed at our sites
gain a unique experience on how address health needs while working with migrant, agricultural, rural, poor
populations.
Placements
Placement opportunities are posted on our website in March and interviews are held throughout the months of
March and April, interns are selected in May and announcements are made soon thereafter. Student
placements may begin as early as May 5; starting dates are flexible and negotiable. All students are required
to attend an orientation session, sign a learning agreement, and develop a work plan.
Placement locations are available throughout the state. Students have a choice of being placed at a local
center or at the central administrative office in Raleigh. It all depends on the type of placements available and
type of experience the students wants to gain.
Stipends are available, pending availability of funds. Travel is required for some placements. NCFHP
provides limited travel support. NCFHP does not provide housing or reimbursement of housing costs. Please
speak to your advisor if you are in need of resources to assist you with these expenses.
Type of Projects
NCFHP determines projects each year depending on the needs
of contract sites and the central administrative office. We are
often seeking students that want to assist with outreach, health
screenings, health education, and case management. NCFHP
has approximately 14 healthcare sites across the state; four of
these sites are within 40 miles of the Triangle area.
