AmeriCorps Service Opportunity
The AmeriCorps SAFE Program in North Carolina (NC-SAFE) is made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Association of Farmworker Opportunity Programs (AFOP), the Pesticide Section of the NC Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services, and the North Carolina Farmworker Health Program (NCFHP) with its contract sites across the state.
The overall purpose of the NC-SAFE Program is to reduce pesticide exposure through training, education, and outreach. To achieve its goal, NCFHP works to recruit individuals to serve as AmeriCorps members who are placed at NCFHP-funded sites to perform the following activities:
1) conduct pesticide safety training and education
2) provide a variety of direct and supportive services, including outreach
3) build community support and partnerships
Service Requirements
Applicant must be at least 18 years of age, have a high school diploma or GED certificate, be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident, demonstrate proficiency in speaking Spanish, an indegenous language, and/or Creole, have a valid driver's license, car, and evidence of car insurance, and ability to commit to the full term of services. Applicant should be able to attend a week-long orientation out of the state sponsored by AFOP.
Member Benefits
All Americorps SAFE program members receive a living allowance, health insurance, and reimbursement of mileage for use of their personal vehicles. The annual living allowance for a full-time member (11-month term at 40hrs per week) is that of $11,400 with an educational award of up to $4,725. A part-time member is granted a living allowance of $5,700 (6-month term at 40hrs per week) with an educational awared of up to $2,362. Additional benefits available to members, such as child care and trainings.
